Episode 8 of The Penguin dropped on Sunday night, marking the conclusion of the first season of The Batman spin-off. But is this really the end of the story? Before the series debuted, The Penguin was billed as a limited series, a special event to tie The Batman into the upcoming The Batman Part II. There has been no confirmation of a continuation beyond the episodes HBO originally ordered, but could the growing success of the series change the cards and lead to a renewal?

For now, it seems that a second season of The Penguin is not in the cards. However, those plans can change, and The Batman director Matt Reeves has already left open the possibility of more TV developments in this DC Universe. There are two main reasons why a second season seems unlikely. First, the series’ function as a bridge between The Batman and The Batman Part II may be sufficient with these episodes (and the timing wouldn’t be ideal for another season before the sequel comes out). Reeves also confirmed that series star Colin Farrell will appear in the next film, clarifying his character’s role in The Batman universe once the series concludes.

The second reason is Farrell himself, who has expressed a reluctance to shoot another season. In an interview with Total Film, when asked about a possible renewal, Farrell replied: “I don’t know, man. I enjoyed it, but it was also tiring. Towards the end, I was constantly complaining, saying I just wanted to finish. But at the same time, I felt this grumpy gratitude.”

He added: “I still felt honored: I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [the Penguin in the 1960s TV series], and then Danny DeVito [in 1992’s Batman Returns] was my Penguin. It’s been a privilege to be a part of that legacy. But ultimately…”. The showrunner of the series, Lauren LeFranc, has left a door open for the future of The Penguin, telling The Direct: “We’ve given it our all this season. To do a second season, we should feel like we can top what we’ve done. I think there’s still a lot of depth to these characters, as terrible as they are”.

On the future of The Batman and its characters on TV, Reeves recently hinted at a possible series of individual protagonists between films, always conceived as self-contained stories. In an interview, Reeves explained: “We’ve talked about doing other series… you can have an epic, novelistic experience in this crime saga, but with independent stories. The story of Oz is the story of Oz, and other stories would have the same approach”.

One detail that might make you think is how The Penguin is presented on the MAX streaming service. The episodes are listed as “S1E1,” “S1E2,” and so on, unlike other HBO limited series that simply say “Episode 1,” “Episode 2,” etc. This could hint at the possibility of a renewal, but it’s more of a clue than a direct confirmation of the series’ future.
