The Boys showrunner and executive producer Eric Kripke reveals that filming will begin very soon. After the shocking season 4 finale of The Boys, which left the fates of several major characters up in the air, there’s only one episode left of Prime Video’s Emmy-nominated superhero satire. While viewers will likely catch up with the young adult spinoff Gen V first, the main series will be getting to work very soon.
According to Collider, speaking at a For Your Consideration event focused on Prime Video’s success, Kripke revealed, “We start shooting a week from Monday. That’s less than two weeks.” The veteran showrunner, who has also worked on dramas like Supernatural and Timeless, also reflected on the end of the superhero satire: “I’m lucky in that I can maintain my denial for quite some time because I’m so busy right now… The amount of work, it’s so demanding that I think somewhere in the middle of the season, it’s going to hit me, and it’s going to really hit me emotionally. I’ve been in denial. I haven’t fully figured it out yet. It’s going to be tough.”
What Kripke’s update means for The Boys
The fifth season of The Boys will have to answer all the various questions that emerged from the previous episode, whether it’s shedding light on Butcher’s (Karl Urban) dark and deadly new side or showcasing the beefed-up team-up between Homelander (Antony Starr) and Sister Sage (Susan Heyward). But before the fan-favorite adaptation can reveal too much in terms of specific plot points, there’s a long reshoot process ahead. Urban previously said that season five wouldn’t be released until 2026.
The extended absence makes sense for a few reasons. The first is that The Boys, an adaptation of Garth Ennis’s gory comics, is a VFX-heavy series. The second is that Gen V season two is set to release in 2025 and could feature at least some crossover between the two worlds. However, the latest update means that there’s no shortage of further casting updates and set photos.
