Next summer, three years after the conclusion of the Jurassic World trilogy, the franchise will evolve once again with Jurassic World Rebirth by director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Starring Avengers: Endgame star Scarlett Johansson, rising talent Jonathan Bailey, and two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (who may or may not end up playing the MCU’s Blade), this action-packed new chapter will see an intrepid team racing to obtain DNA samples from the three most colossal creatures across land, sea, and air. Now, thanks to Empire, we have a new look at Johansson’s black ops expert Zora Bennett, a character tasked with leading an expert team on a top-secret mission to obtain genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.
However, when Zora’s operation crosses paths with a civilian family whose boat expedition is capsized by predatory aquatic dinosaurs, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face to face with a sinister and shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades. “It goes back to what I loved about the original,” Gareth Edwards says of his vision for the film, “with lots of different scenarios to choose from and moments of tense, fun action. As a director, there were lots of opportunities to have fun and try to play with the audience.” Taking place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the director notes that this film kicks off “a whole new chapter in the Jurassic timeline.”
As for what we can expect from Johansson’s Bennett, he adds, “She’s looking for meaning in her life after leaving the military, and she’s presented with this opportunity where she basically doesn’t have to work anymore. But through this journey, she starts to question the ethical rights and flaws of what they’re doing.” Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those that remain live in isolated equatorial environments with climates similar to those in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures in that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humanity.
