HBO's Game of Thrones has dominated pop culture for nearly a decade, and given how passionate fans have been about the series, it was inevitable that the ending wouldn't please everyone. Peter Dinklage, one of the series' stars, is among those who appreciated the way the story ended, although other cast and crew members have taken time to reflect on their participation and expressed frustration with the ending. However, Dinklage stressed that this is just his opinion and that everyone is free to have their own views.

"I loved the ending! You don't have to agree with me. How about if I was like, 'Yeah, I agree. I hated the ending. The last season was horrible? I mean, that would be a lot worse than saying I loved it, which I did. I can’t speak for other people’s opinions, and that’s what makes our job interesting, because everyone has different opinions, and everyone can write about them, discuss them, drink about them, and argue about them. It’s awesome. I think it means you’re doing something right. It’s like an old Irish way of looking at the world. There’s something wrong if everything’s going well.”

This is just the latest time Dinklage has shown his support for the series; he explained in 2021 how he felt fans were mostly disappointed because any ending brings with it negative feelings, especially when the drama of the show’s finale was accompanied by so many tragic revelations. “I think the reason there was some backlash to the finale was because they were mad at us for breaking up with them. We were going off the air and they didn’t know what to do on Sunday nights. They wanted more, so they reacted badly to that.”

He joked, “They wanted the pretty white boys to ride off into the sunset together. And anyway, it’s fiction. There are dragons! Get over it… No, but the show subverts what you expect, and that’s what I love about it. Yes, it was called Game of Thrones, but at the end, when people stopped me in the street, they were like, ‘Who’s going to be on the throne?’ I don’t understand why that was all they were thinking about, because the show was so much more than that.”

While fans are still divided over the finale’s revelations, excitement for the franchise as a whole continues, as evidenced by the popularity of House of the Dragon. Additionally, several other spin-offs are in development.
