Last year, a news outlet reported that The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan had pitched a Clayface movie to DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, and now the project is said to be moving forward. According to Daniel Richtman (via CBM), Flanagan has completed the script and is slated to begin filming next spring. Flanagan has previously said he wants to take part in a Clayface project, describing his potential film as a “standalone horror/thriller/tragedy.” Plot details are still a mystery, but from what we know, Flanagan’s idea reimagines the character as a good guy.
Next Point News’ Apocalyptic Horseman (which we know to be true) also chimed in with the following. We don’t know if the Clayface movie will be part of the DCU or Matt Reeves’ Bat-Verse/Epic Crime Saga, but we’ve heard that the villain could also appear in The Batman Part II. We have no idea how a character like Clayface would fit into Reeves’ relatively down-to-earth take on the Dark Knight’s world, but we’re guessing his shapeshifting abilities would be ditched and Basil Karlo (if that’s the version of the character that’s chosen) would be significantly reimagined.
We reported on this last year actually. The script is finished and was written by Mike Flanagan. Expect this to be one of the next films after Supergirl. It’s aiming to shoot in Spring last I heard https://t.co/KVl5l3bE9c
Interestingly, Alan Tudyk recently revealed that he’ll be voicing Clayface in James Gunn’s Creature Commandos animated series. As for The Batman Part II, THR recently indicated that the film could be delayed again, but it’s currently set to begin filming next year. It’s worth noting that co-writer Mattson Tomlin recently said filming will begin in 2025, and his comments suggest the sequel will be worth the wait. “It’s shooting next year. We’re getting ready for it, and I will say the bar is as high as it gets,” Tomlin told ScreenRant.
“It’s a sequel to the first one,” he continued. “But also Matt [Reeves] is like no other. In the five years that I’ve worked with him so closely, I’ve tried to soak up as much as I can from him as humanly possible, and I’m so grateful for the time that I get to spend with him, because he’s a true artist operating in a world where sometimes art doesn’t get to flourish, and he’s trying to do something that really matters. So to be able to be a part of this journey and be a part of this process is really incredible and extraordinary. I’m excited about the movie.”
Plot details have not yet been released, but it is expected that all the characters from the first film (who survived) will return, along with some characters from The Penguin. It is also rumored that both Dr. Tommy Elliot/Hush and Dick Grayson/Robin could be introduced.
