We have all made bad choices in life, but in the film industry a simple “no” can mark your career forever, as happened to Bruce Willis, who once said, when he was still giving interviews to the press, that he had turned down the role in one of the most iconic romantic films of the 90s. In the year 1990, the temperatures in movie theaters had a sudden spike due to one of the most erotic scenes ever seen: before the film Ghost, no one would have thought that creating vases of clay and mud could be something so sensual, however, Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze left their mark, a mark that Bruce Willis decided not to take.
In an interview with journalist David Sheff, Bruce Willis commented that, in fact, there was a film he said “no” to and that later became a success: “I didn’t understand it. I said, ‘Hey, that guy’s dead. How are they going to have a love story?’ Famous last words. But I don’t regret it, because it just doesn’t matter.” This is how the great actor commented in 1996 on the film in which his then wife Demi Moore starred.
Before Patrick Swayze was cast in the role first offered to Willis, many actors were sought who could play in the film, including Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Tom Cruise and even Michael J Fox, as he himself confirmed in an interview with The View: “They told me about Ghost early in its development. I said it would never work. I said, ‘Whoopi is great but it’s never going to work. And then it was great, a huge success, and I’m a fucking idiot.”
Ghost was a huge box office success, grossing $505 million worldwide, when its budget was only $22 million. However, it is easy to understand what made many, including Michael J. Fox and Bruce Willis himself, turn down the project. Although the idea of a love story with a ghost seems strange enough to be tempting at first, it should be noted that behind the cameras was Jerry Zucker, until then known for his participation in parody comedies such as Land as You Can or Top Secret.
